Current research interest

The growing use of nanoparticles in a large amount of technical applications implying femtosecond lasers (photothermal cancer therapy, nanoparticle manufacturing) motivates fundamental studies aiming to improve our knowledge of their properties and underlying processes during this laser irradiation. In this context, it is essential to understand the specific processes related to this laser/nanoparticle interaction since it creates a specific regime of matter referred as out-of-equilibrium in terms of temperature (Te ≠ Ti). This regime is hardly described by theoretical models appealing for development of probing techniques able to retrieve the relaxation processes with high temporal resolution.

The objective is to probe the solid-liquid phase transition induced by infrared femtosecond laser irradiation in gold nanoparticles. The program proposed aims to investigate this dynamics thanks to time-resolved measurements of the gold valence band modification using x-ray photoemission electron spectroscopy UPS, XPS) on free-standing nanoparticle beams. These experiments are performed on different facilities able to deliver the necessary probe x-ray source including : femtosecond laser facilities (XUV high-order harmonic source), synchrotron facilities (brilliant X and XUV source), free electron laser (FEL) facilities (brilliant femtosecond X and XUV sources).
